Bjorn, do you remember how many students typically took VHS courses each semester? Do you know if the mentor also had access to the course, and whether or not he/she checked to make sure students were staying caught up? Finally, was this system helpful to students -- did most successfully complete their courses?

At MSJ our librarian was the mentor (smaller school) and students worked in the library lab to do their work.   Virtual High School was an actual class with a class period so all of the students took it at the same time of the day. This worked out well for scheduling.   So for larger schools maybe there are 2 or 3 classes specifically VHS.   Our mentor just made sure they were on task during that period, just the same way any other teacher would expect their students to be on task.

At Danville we provide 10th-12th graders with a class period in which to have the course and a mentor.  The mentor also has access to the students' grades and makes contact with the online instructors.  

Some students work on their online courses during the provided class period, others flex their schedules to work on their online classes at home.  

We had tremendous success last year with the VTVLC.  Only one student failed to complete her course and that was due to health reasons.
