Isn't the nature of what we do essentially confidential as healthcare
professionals? Then there is only one option, not up for debate. Kick the
list off public search engines.

While I would love to find more ways to get more people to join and become
engaged in MLA, I don't think restricting the MEDLIB-L list to members only
would be very productive and would probably limit discussion more than
promote it. There a lot of medical and health science librarians who aren't
MLA members on this list. There are librarians in academic libraries who
have health sciences programs but no medical school who are on this list
(and learn and participate) but who aren't MLA members.

I also don't think it is fair to limit it to just librarians to be on the
list. How many times has somebody on this list complained and said, "I hope
the reps from Ovid (or whatever company) are listening!" or "Can a rep from
EBSCO (again whatever company) comment as to why this is happening?" We use
their products and to make their products better they need feedback, and
like it or not, we provide feedback on this list.
There have been several times where I have gotten very helpful replies from
vendors after I mentioned something on MEDLIB-L. Sometimes I have mentioned
information to my rep but things don't change because I am just one voice
represented by one rep in a large company. However the numerous voices on
MEDLIB-L echoing the same thoughts make a greater impact.

Regarding privacy....there is no privacy these days if you are online at all
(including a closed list). You have no privacy if you subscribe to this list
(or any list) so deal with it. If you want to say something that you don't
want others to read then don't send it out to the list, send it to the
individual and tell them it isn't to be forwarded on.
But remember even that communication isn't private. As somebody mentioned,
there is nothing stopping anybody from forwarding your email.

It would not be cool. This is MEDLIB-L's description from its own
archives:

MEDLIB-L is an electronic discussion list for medical and health sciences
librarians. Practical and theoretical issues in public and technical
services are discussed. This forum is for ideas, questions, announcements,
and concerns specific to health sciences libraries.

<http://www.mlanet.org/discussion/medlib-l.html> MEDLIB-L was founded on
January 23, 1991 by Nancy Start. List ownership was transferred to the
Medical Library Association on August 16, 1995. After being hosted at the
University of Buffalo for many years, the list was transferred to the
University of Vermont in May 2007.

MLA did not create MEDLIB-L. I feel that restricting it to MLA members is
against the original spirit of the listserv, which was created by an
individual.
