The screening for AAA was approved, and should anyone be denied payment for this service for eligible recipients, I would appreciate hearing about it.  This screening is woefully underutilized to my mind, but was very strongly researched and can save lives.

However, it does not apply to every male 65 or older and there are some other stipulations involved.  Please check http://www.pacificvascular.com/extra/medicareAAAscreeningben5-07.pdf for details.  I do not think anything has changed significantly.  Aetna states "if selection criteria are met" and I figure they would hold us to that.  So, if you got a never smoked male tell him to buy a carton of cigarettes, and he can get scanned?  Ya gotta love the bureaucracy!  Or not?

This is from Aetna, but likely applicable to all carriers/MACs for this benefit:

HCPCS codes covered if selection criteria are met:
G0389  Ultrasound, B-scan and/or real time with image documentation; for
abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening [one time for men 65 years of age
or older]
