Hi Joanne - I do not have access to 1982 Lancet but when I tried searching Lancet 2012 in Pubmed and this specific PMID 23013602, I got access to the article via our Linksource link resolver. We have access to Lancet because we subscribe to the Clinical Key database which is on the Science Direct platform.

But yes, I do agree that Elsevier does not try to work with other vendors. Clinical Key/Science Direct does not allow our integrated search tool to "crawl" their site so is not compatible. Because we are a small hospital library, lacking the Clinical Key titles in an integrated search negates the utility of have an integrated search capacity since so much content is not included. I presume other publishers have this policy for their databases. I would be interested to know which ones. Especially galling is that we used to subscribe to Elsevier's MD Consult which did work with the integrated search tool. Further galling, before I purchased CK I had a handful of Science Direct titles that I could never get the integrated search tool to access, but was never told why. Since these titles are included in the CK database, I thought by subscribing to CK I would finally get them included in an integrated search. Rather, because CK is on the Science Direct platform I am left with a huge amount of content that must be searched separately. I feel rather foolish thinking my tidy endeavor was possible. Lesson: ask before you buy database content whether any search tools you want to employ will be supported so you can weigh that in your decisions. And yes, if enough of us make our needs known then change is possible.

One of the specific articles that doesn't work for us is pmid: 13882322. Does that pmid work properly for any of you?

Thanks,

Subject: Lancet volume numbering change in Science Direct

Yesterday afternoon we discovered that Science Direct decided to renumber volumes of the Lancet. So far it looks like this affects 1994 and earlier. For us, this means that PubMed citations don't match what's in the Science Direct and our Serials Solutions links don't work. We're already getting interlibrary loan requests from our own patrons who now think we don't have access to the Lancet. Has anyone else been experiencing problems with this? Our eresources librarian is contacting the vendors. In the past, Elsevier/Science Direct's response to problems of this nature has been that they don't work with other vendors - basically they don't care. So if you happen to subscribe through Science Direct, you may also want to contact them. Perhaps many voices may result in a solution.

Best,
Joanne
