Funny- I was just working with a French teacher yesterday who had the same
question.  My research dug up this, which may be helpful--

Do your students currently use Alt codes for special characters?  I just
checked with our Spanish teachers, and they report that the Alt codes
"usually" work in Google Docs.  Kind of a pain on non-desktops, though.
