Good Morning Cassie,

We abated taxes on a property that had been destroyed by a fire that had a state payment and disregarded the state payment.  Our reasoning was that because the state payment could possibly include the taxpayers own money from an income tax refund that he/she wanted applied to their real estate tax bill.  I thought about all the different possibilities and thought that if we took the income sensitivity into consideration we could potentially be taking away money that would have actually been an income tax refund to the property owner.  The payment from the state does not state if the money is for income sensitivity or a tax refund.

It would be very interesting to hear from as many towns as possible regarding this issue.

Almira Aekus, Clerk, Treasurer & Collector of Taxes

Thanks Jim.  Yes, my treasurer has a call in to Bill.  He is out of the
office this week.

We have a home that was caught on fire, so it will clearly be abated but
there is a nearly $2,000.  state payment on the tax bill.  My treasurer has
a call in to the Tax Dept. but in the meantime I thought I would ask all of
you if any of you  have had this situation and how it was handled for
abatement.  Our meeting is next Monday.
