+1 for cloud storage. Our 1:1 students have everything in GAFE, and keeping data separate from the devices makes maintenance (eg. imaging) a much easier proposition. Moving STAFF to the cloud will take time but we're getting there, and there will likely always be office/Admin staff with special needs that will be tied to local storage, either machine or network.

When people develop personal habits that assure their work is backed up using cloud resources that they can access from anywhere then they are empowered and self sufficient.

Backup is one of the hidden costs of the old IT model.  Once you evaluate every dollar spent on how well it supports the students' learning there are so many other things to spend the school's resources on that give you a bigger return than expensive server backup systems.

We use drive images as our front line support strategy.  It is amazing and reassuring that whenever we need to reimage students' or teachers' 1:1 computers there is no problem with files being lost.  Cloud computing has changed everything.

 We stopped backing up all staff and student files over 3 years ago and have not had a single problem.  We provide training each year on how staff and students can back up their files to Google Drive, or other sources (thumb drives, ipods, etc).  We found that none of our staff had school files bigger then what google drive could handle.  The bigger files were often personal photos, music, movies etc.  For those staff we showed them how they could buy a personal hard drive to back up their data.

The only exceptions were our music department and our office staff, who have a school bought hard drive to back up too. 
This has been a win -win.  I get to spend more time with my students everyday and we saved money.
