Hi Shannon,
At CVU we used to start the computer programming class with Alice, then
move into Java.  I wasn't teaching the class at the time, but the feedback
from that teacher was that Alice does a great job of giving students a feel
for object-oriented programming and it is highly engaging.  In fact, he had
the problem that when students switched to writing their own code from
scratch, it was a big let-down engagement-wise.
