nice tips Joanne! for just your Drive Docs, you can also just put everything in your drive into a folder and download it the upload it to your personal account.

Just a heads up on Google Takeout ...

It now makes you choose a format and, if you go with the default, it uses Microsoft format so all your docs get transferred to MS instead of Google format. Creates a mess. And there is only "open document format" which appeared to be (not sure - didn't test it) the way to go.

Also, when I tried to unzip and merge all the files together, many of my files could not be unzipped because the "file names were too long."  So, I ended up manually uploading each 2GB folder to my new account without unzipping. In spite of Google "server" issues with my personal account on the weekend, I think it's just as easy to give edit rights to your new account for each folder and make copies of everything you want to keep. That way you can make a copy of any shared files within a folder at the same time instead of losing them. Working better for me that way, anyway.  It was so easy last time I did takeout two years ago and this time it just seemed messier.

I did read about a way to use the Drive client to transfer files, but didn't test it.

Unless of course, the administrator will do it all for you with backupify or another migration tool to make it easy for the user  ...

Hi folks,
I know this was posted on the listserv, but I can't find it:

We have some departing teachers who need to move their docs from drive to a new account outside the school's domain. How do we do this?

Thanks, Holly
