Our high school language arts teachers spend a lot of time teaching students "close reading."  Basically: how to effectively read and annotate texts, highlight important passages, summarize, etc..  More info on the subject can be found at

There are several good iPad apps which facilitate this and/or which allow users to mark up .pdfs and other texts.  But are there good resources for those using computers for their work?  Whether it's a Website or program, we're looking for something which allows students to practice their close reading skills or, even better, something which allows students working from a (Mac) laptop to easily markup digital texts.

I found Skim for Mac ( when I Yahoogled this topic, but have no classroom experience with it.
