Thanks, but unfortunately, using the Notes doesn't help me quickly identify the device on my network of mixed devices, which is all I want to be able to do. Honestly, I'm astonished that something so basic is considered "low priority" within the Chromium development forums. Actually, it was apparently dropped from discussion sometime late in 2013, with no resolution, of course.

I had already discovered the thread Ray referred to below, and for some reason, just couldn't believe that it was left like that without further development. Even Apple, which is notorious for messing up networking with their own proprietary crap, had the good sense to maintain that functionality when they ported to Unix. It's stuff like this that makes me so reluctant to ever rely on Google for anything.

which apparently is going to be complicated, as hank was hoping it wouldn't be.

As far as I know, there is no way to actually assign what we think of as a host name.

We create a host name, and assign asset tags in the Notes Section of the device management:

Then  we create a label to put on the device, along with the asset tag so its easy to find in a classroom full of machines.

Hope this helps.

After searching a bit on the web I cannot find a simple way to set the hostname on a Chromebook. I'm hoping one of you can explain how this is done (and it will be fairly simple) before I register my astonishment that it's not possible or difficult.
