Good Morning Food Safety Modernization Act stakeholders,

Secretary Ross would like to invite you to attend a Vermont and Northeast Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NEASDA) hosted listening session with FDA Deputy Commissioner Mike Taylor and subject matter experts regarding the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The listening session will take place on November 17th, 2014, from 9:00am – 1:00pm in the Chase Center located at the Vermont Law School in South Royalton, VT.

The listening session will focus on the supplemental rules that were released on September 29th, 2014, for three of the FSMA rules - Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce; Current Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food; and Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals. The FDA is accepting comments on the supplemental rules until December 15th, 2014.

FDA subject matter experts will provide an overview of each supplemental rule and then attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification from FDA. The purpose of the session is to inform the public, producers, and processors about changes the FDA has made to the previously released rules since the closure of the initial comment periods. The supplemental rules, which are second drafting for certain sections of the original proposed rules,  are based on the unprecedented level of comments and valuable input received from farmers and others directly affected by the rules.

Attached is the recently released VAAFM media advisory about the November 17th Listening Session which includes a brief description of the supplemental rules as well as instructions on submitting official comments to FDA.

We hope you are able to attend this session and will share it with your networks as an opportunity to help shape FDA’s final food safety rules.
