*Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program*

Seeks Individuals & Firms to provide business advising to farm, food and
forestry sector businesses

*Qualifications Due:* November 19, 2014(we will accept late submissions
into December)

*Networking Event:* December 2, 2014, 2-5pm, Vermont College of Fine
Arts, Montpelier, VT

The Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program is seeking individuals and
firms that are interested in providing business-related services to the
agricultural and forestry sectors. As part of a network of organizations
in Vermont that provide business planning and technical assistance, we
are continually seeking qualified consultants that can help deliver
business-related services to our farm, food and forest-sector client
businesses, from financial analysis and strategic planning to marketing
assistance, legal advice, management coaching, and a variety of other
services.

In an effort to facilitate networking between the individuals and firms
with these skills and the service provider organizations in our network,
we are sending out the attached Request for Qualifications; individuals
and firms are invited to provide submissions which we will collect and
circulate amongst our organizational peers. This will be followed by a
networking event where consultants and firms can here from each of our
organizations to become familiar with available consulting opportunities.

For more details, please see the full RFQ here
<http://www.vhcb.org/Farm-Forest-Viability/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Consultant-RFQ.pdf>.
We will accept late submissions.

Please also forward this announcement to individuals, consultants, firms
and other organizations that may be interested or can help spread this
information far and wide. We invite consultants with relevant expertise
but with little experience with these kinds of businesses to respond --
we are interested in finding people with transferrable skills to work
with farm, food and forestry businesses!

Thank you!

Ela Chapin, Liz Gleason, and Ian Hartman

Land For Good, together with the UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture,
are working on a Farmland Investor Financing Research Project. Earlier
this Fall, we sent out invites to participate in the project to 5
"values based" farmland investment companies operating and buying
farmland in New England. Four out of the 5 have accepted.
Part of our research project involves assembling a focus group of
farmers who will critique these investment models. _
Now we need to recruit our farmer focus group and *need your assistance*._
     What we are looking for:
-10 farmers who are actively farming in commercial operations
-A diversity of farm sectors--dairy, horticulture, maple and also both
conventional and organic
-Diversity of age and gender and farm size
-Diversity of experience in business--new businesses and also operators
with substantial experience
-Both farmers who have already secured land through purchase, and those
who are leasing--we feel that we need this diversity of perspective on
land tenure options for good analytical discussion.
-An interest in land access and land tenure options and issues--even if
they have already secured their own land.
-MOST IMPORTANT: Good analytical skills, especially in the area of
financial analysis, and comfort with legal topics.
We offering a $350 stipend and mileage for in person meetings. More
details on the project are below.
Please send suggestions directly to me ASAP. We would like to have
our group assembled by early December. Once I hear from you, I will
reach out to them with a direct invite. ___What I need from you_:
Name(s)
Location of the Farmer
Basics of their farming and experience (ie "conventional dairy farmer
milking 80 cows", operating for 12 years)
email and phone contact information
a description of their current land tenure situation and history (ie
"leased for years and then bought a farm"; "actively leasing", etc)
A few sentences on why you think that they might be able to contribute
to this project, and might be willing to participate.

thanks,
Mike Ghia

*Our Project. *How dovarious farmland investment models work for farmers
/and/ investors? This project builds on farmland investment research by
Land For Good in which investors were interviewed and investment models
were described. The next step is to hear directly from farmers about how
these models might work---or could have worked---for them. What is
appealing and what are farmers' concerns? Both farmers and investors
will benefit from exploring how these models play out with regard to
finances, land tenure security, legal arrangements and other factors. We
will bring farmers and investment entity representatives together to
learn from each other, and to see how such approaches may gain traction
and success in our region

We anticipate participation involving not more than 15 hours of the
farmers time during the winter months. We will provide a stipend of $350
and reimburse for mileage to attend two in person meetings. Here's what
is involved:

1.We'll send the farmers information to review about selected investment
models in December. A "request for information" with 6 pages of
questions on these investment models has already been sent to the
Investor groups participating in the project, and are expected back by
December 1.

2.Financial and legal advisers will also analyze the models with
particular focus on how they play out for farmers.

3.In early January, farmers will participate in a facilitated focus
group of farmers to talk about the models, interests and concerns, how
they might work in their situation if relevant, and what more the
farmers want to know about the models.

4.After the farmer focus group, we'll ask the investor groups to respond
to the focus group questions and those that arise from the analyses.

5.In late January or early February, we'll bring the farmers back to a
group discussion with representatives from the selected investment
models for an open dialogue. After the dialogue, the farmers will be
meet without the investors to allow for candid discussion and feedback.

6.The project team will prepare a report about what we've learned. We'll
share findings with farmers, the group of investors and other entities
working to improve farmland access.

Agriculture, are working on a Farmland Investor Financing Research
Project. Earlier this Fall, we sent out invites to participate in
the project to 5 "values based" farmland investment companies
operating and buying farmland in New England. Four out of the 5
    have accepted.
Part of our research project involves assembling a focus group of
farmers who will critique these investment models.
Now we need to recruit our farmer focus group and need your
        assistance.
    What we are looking for:
-10 farmers who are actively farming in commercial operations
-A diversity of farm sectors--dairy, horticulture, maple and also
    both conventional and organic
-Diversity of age and gender and farm size
-Diversity of experience in business--new businesses and also
    operators with substantial experience
-Both farmers who have already secured land through purchase, and
those who are leasing--we feel that we need this diversity of
perspective on land tenure options for good analytical discussion.
-An interest in land access and land tenure options and issues--even
if they have already secured their own land.
-MOST IMPORTANT: Good analytical skills, especially in the area of
financial analysis, and comfort with legal topics.
We offering a $350 stipend and mileage for in person meetings.
More details on the project are below.
Please send suggestions directly to me ASAP. We would like to
have our group assembled by early December. Once I hear from you, I
will reach out to them with a direct invite. What I need
      from you:
Name(s)
Location of the Farmer
Basics of their farming and experience (ie "conventional dairy
farmer milking 80 cows", operating for 12 years)
email and phone contact information
a description of their current land tenure situation and history (ie
"leased for years and then bought a farm"; "actively leasing", etc)
A few sentences on why you think that they might be able to
contribute to this project, and might be willing to participate.
thanks,
Hi Folks,

The UVM New Farmer Building a Sustainable Business class is starting on
Dec. 3rd and we have spaces left in the class!

The class is designed for farmers who are thinking about a new
agricultural venture, to diversify their current operation, or to
start-up a new farm business. Participants will assess their resources,
develop marketing strategies, begin to understand financials, learn how
and where to get funding for their businesses, and network with other
farmers.

*If you know anyone who might be a fit? *Please pass this information on
to them.

*More about the class*
Dennis Kauppila, UVM Extension Specialist is the lead instructor for the
4-session class offered De. 3, 17, Jan. 7 and 21 from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
