Thank you, Elizabeth for your help and I apologize to everyone else for
clogging your inbox-- sounds like it's not a widespread problem as I had
feared.   I'll take this off-list and keep hacking away.

One interesting note for anyone who's still reading-- when I switched to a
different Google account, all of the extensions for that account were added
back.  But when I then switched back to the original account (the most
important one, of course!), no dice.  Nothing else is missing (I still have
history, bookmarks, apps-- just no extensions).  When I signed into Chrome
on another computer that I use regularly, the extensions were gone there,
as well.
