Why not just have them use Google Takeout? https://www.google.com/settings/takeout
If they want to take Drive files they might consider putting all files/folders in one folder, downloading it and uploading it to their personal gmail account. This allows them to take shared files (files they don't own) that are within their folders. The takeout only extracts files they own.

I thought I'd wake this thread up, rather than start a new one on the same topic.

We have several teachers who are leaving. They would like to "take" the contents of their google accounts to a new (Google or Gmail) account). I see that Backupify's Migrator can do this. Is Migrator *the* way to do this or are there others? Have you used it? Did it do as promised?

It's $15 per account. If you use it, do you have the teacher pay the $15?

thanks!

Exactly. A single domain with separate organizations for the faculty/staff, K-8 and 9-12 would've made the transitions easier since all the docs, etc. wouldn't be impacted.

I kept this email for a reason, but I cant be sure why.

Did you mean here that you wished your k-8 and 9-12 were in the some domain, so that you had less of a headache when student users migrated up?

I believe if we were going to do this from scratch that we would build it as a single domain with sub-organizations for the different levels.
