I found a solution to an issue that you or your coworkers may be having on Mac OS.

If you have an office file in a shared drive that you know is closed and no one else has it open at the moment, but you still get a prompt saying that the file is locked for editing, try deleting the temporary hidden file that is saved in the same directory. It will usually have "~$" before the file name.

To show hidden files on a mac: go to terminal and type or paste the following: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES , then relaunch Finder.
