We just switched to Weebly.  They have an education/campus edition that includes sites for teachers and students.  $500 a year and you get access for 20 teachers and 500 students.

Design and control of the site layout is lightyears head of Google sites.

The Winooski School District website is hosted by BlueHost which provides us with a secure location to host the website. I created the website myself as a custom theme for WordPress.

Using WordPress as your Content Management System will enable you to customize access for other employees in your district. Ranging from editing the entire website to only one page.

We also do have some rogue Google Sites linked from our website but that is due to hasten planning. Let me know if you want or need more info.

You don't need to use tables and text boxes to create different layouts. There are many good examples of Google Sites...http://www.kirksvillewebdesign.com/google-sites
The advantage of using Google Sites is the integration with Google Apps and ability to collaborate/co-edit pages, if you are a Google Apps School then it's a good option.

The biggest reason would be more control over the layout of the site.  Yes, I do realize that you can do a lot with tables and text boxes to make things work but in the end for our main school sites I think moving to a different CMS would offer a little more freedom.

I have noticed most schools on the forum do not use Google sites for their main site.  So I would throw that question out there also:  Why do people not use Google for their sites?

May I ask why you are moving away from Google?

I was wondering what companies others use for website hosting.  We are currently using Google Sites, but for our main school sites I was thinking about moving away from Google.
