I know Steve has been quiet on Flownet
lately. He has been busy attending to some personal things and am
sure he is confident in our ability to work things out on our own. I
saw Jeanette's post as something helpful toward us as a profession, in
addition, I see no problem with light good natured banter back and
forth. Can't we just move on? lol

Hi Folks,
I’m with Phil. Let’s
just lighten up a bit. Personally, I have no problem with a bit of
tasteful marketing, related products, educational products and / or opportunities,
review meetings, etc. Every computer has a delete key. As
long as things are honestly represented, I do not feel such posts are out
of line whatsoever. If something is out of line, members can complain
and I have every confidence that not only does Steve have nothing else
to do but spend hours policing UVMFlownet post, his impeccable judgment
will remedy any posts that cross the line. ;-) Although
Hockey season is upon us……. He could be distracted…….

Hi All,
Thanks for making my dreams
come true… pot stirrer! All tongue in cheek, and no one should be
offended because we do have free speech in this country at least for a
little while longer. I think my point was to recognize that industry
vendors sometimes are the best resource of information on a certain subjects
and perhaps ICD-10 is one of them.
I was one of those technologist
that walked through the exhibit hall hoping none of the vendors would make
eye contact so I would not have to listen to their sales pitch, but now
I am one of those vendors pitching like Nolan Ryan. All of the vendors
at your local or national trade shows have spent money to be there with
the hopes that we can get you to listen about a system or device that we
feel will benefits the industry. We care about your patients and
how accurate and/or easy we can make your jobs.
I am not looking for sympathy
(maybe a little) but if Rick, Jeanne or other vendors have a contribution
on a subject that adds to the conversation, I hope they express it. I
respect my fellow vendor’s opinions because we talk to a huge number of
technologist and physicians and we have gained knowledge and perspective
that should be helpful.
Thanks for reading.

Could be wrong but as I recall
it was a vendor unscrupously posing as a technologist pedaling his product.
Different from a vendor educating us about some new technology or software
that may improve our laboratories efficicency.

Sorry to set you off Bill, I am

back in 2008 or 9 or maybe before that of this being the case. I may be
wrong and it may have just been said in here that it happened. Only Steve
Knight can say for sure.
I had no animosity toward Jeanette
nor anyone else for that matter but since Phil brought it up and Terry
jumped in I just wanted to add my two cents from what I had read years
ago and know that advertising was not something encouraged in this list.
If I have offended others I apologize,
I guess I will just remain quiet again for another 20 years or so until
another post actually does set me off.
Bill I am very sorry for getting
you all upset on this. I will stop now or I know I will offend or upset
others.
Enjoy your list.

Ah, to set the record straight,
and probably bring bricks my way, there never was a University of New Mexico
listserve. There was just a list on my personal computer of folks
I knew or met online that had an interest in vascular technology. I
encouraged questions, and not being much of a guru, I posted those questions
to the list.
I suppose that constitutes a "listserve"
albeit a very clumsy one. I wish an archive existed, as our younger
colleagues might be amazed what was done without the niceties of color
imaging or even spectral analysis. I suppose life was easier back
then, very few numbers in the way, much more an art than a science. Maybe
we should never have considered ourselves "technologists"? But,
most everyone was struggling to improve our accuracy and provide better
patient outcomes.
I am somewhat chagrined at how
few real questions came up on the Flownet, and now the SVU UConnect
site.
Rick Grave, I do not think anyone
was ever banned for months, Steve might correct me here, but I do know
public floggings and offline vitriol from myself and others often solved
the policing problems. If you have any evidence of "banning",
I would like to read it. I know of only one case, and that was to
a person making derogatory personal remarks against another Flownetter.
Terry, I am surprised that you,
as a former SVU Board member, would criticize an employee of SVU for trying
to support our professional organization. You wrote; "The original
understanding was that posts were only for educational purposes only."
But it makes me wonder what you know about the "original understanding".
I also believe learning about the impact of the new ICD10 codes IS
educational. At least for those that depend on reimbursement
for their livelihood. Presently I do not, but I still wish to learn
what is happening to our profession.
Jeanette, I happen to know your
post was in good faith, and you clearly declared your position as the SVU
marketing director. Much of the "original" problems with
marketing on the Flownet were related to folks that did not state their
affiliation with equipment or products they supported. I also hope,
regardless of the above flak, that folks still faithful to this forum realize
that our Society needs our support. It was never a requirement that members
of the Flownet be members of SNIVT/SVT/SVU to contribute and engage.
A few months back I thought of
encouraging everyone here to migrate to the SVU forum. I think there
are still some reasons that this forum can and should exist in parallel.
I may be a perpetual optimist, but I believe it is a good thing to
have a place for independent comment, good and bad.
Finally, I think Franklin West
was and is a tremendous asset to not only SVU, but our profession as a
whole. Unfortunately he is now a "former" employee and,
while I think that was a mistake, I know he has not turned his back on
his Society or our profession. By way of disclosure, I have known
Frank since 1978, and one of the two things (if any) we agree is patient
care. The other is "Don't Panic", Douglas Adams.
"The flogging will go on until
morale improves" not sure of the source, perhaps a former boss?

Rick, Terry &
Phil,
Or have we already

With apologies, several
months ago I provided a ‘pitch’ on UVMFLOWNET for SVU’s Coding Advisor,
largely in preparation for the ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition. The only
substantive difference was that pitch included a brief description regarding
how much of the same information might otherwise be accessed online (much
more difficult and painful, IMHO). Like Jeanette, I too was, at the
time, an employee of SVU and, I suspect also similar to Jeanette, I was
attempting to make life easier for RVTs, RVSs, RPVIs, et al. that frequent
UVMFLOWNET.
Admittedly, Jeanette
does not have a clinical background but maybe her marketing background
might help make this product make life easier for clinical folks???
Not sure about the
powers that be but we might just consider the public flogging sufficient
for the offense committed and let a request to not allow it to occur again
be sufficient??? That’s my story and I’m sticking with it …
If anyone cares to
review my crimes, they can be found in the archives (along with many others).
All the best,
/fww
PS: I do recall
some early floggings, even predating UVM (remember Univ. New Mexico’s
listserve?? – and the predated version prior to that … I pray no one
has copies … A fair amount of Douglas Adams, as I recall …
