I think there needs to be something to distinguish between the hospital closing the library vs the hospital closing (the library closes by default) or the hospital getting bought. IF the hospital closes then it can't be a statement on the closure of medical libraries. If the hospital is bought and the library closes, that is trickier and needs to be further examined. When a hospital buys another, many people (not just librarians) lose their jobs and some departments are merged or absorbed. For example you don't have two HR departments. In the New England region, for instance, there have been 38 closures in the last 5 years. Discussions of this trend cover the topics of funding, change in requirements of the Joint Commission, electronic access to resources, the misperception that all needed information is available, for free, on the internet, etc. These discussions continue but, what I would like to know is: just how many medical libraries have closed in the last ten years or twenty years. I would like to know regional and national totals. I know that MLA provides a form for librarians to report when their library is slated to close down but I never have seen a report come out of that information. Can anyone tell me how libraries have closed?
