PhD Position in Blue Carbon and Climate Change Research

We offer up to two 3-year PhD positions within the project “Will carbon burial in coastal wetlands provide a negative feedback to a warmer climate?” funded by the Australian Research council. This project will use cutting edge radioisotope tracer technology to determine carbon dynamics, including carbon burial rates, carbon tidal export, respiration and CO2, CH4 emissions. The focus of this project will be along a wide range of climatically distinct vegetated coastal habitats in Australia, Brazil, India and Micronesia. The student will work within a larger, well-funded project and will closely interact with a number of leading researchers and other students.

The PhD student will work out of the recently constructed laboratories located at the National Marine Science Centre at Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour, Australia, which received the highest rank of 5.0 “well above world average” in oceanography and geochemistry in the 2015 assessment of research excellence by the Australian government.

Applicants will need to have a Masters or Honours degree in a related field, such as environmental sciences, marine sciences, earth sciences, or chemistry. The PhD scholarship will provide a tax free stipend of $25,800 and tuition fees will be exempt. Students with an APA scholarship are eligible for a $10,000 top up scholarship. Interested applicants should send their CV, and a letter of interest to Dr. Christian J. Sanders – [log in to unmask]. Closing date January 31, 2016 and starting date, by June 2016.
