Oh, I know what the problem is.  Before I did all that, I went to notes on the ipad and tested speech.  The very first time I hit the microphone button, a message pops up asking me if I want to turn on dictation, and I said yes..  I just  tried it on another ipad and what happened to you is exactly what happened to me until I got out of the test and went and did that first.  Then I went back to the test, and it worked fine.

That's funny, when I tried it, it worked just fine.  Were you using guided access, or single app mode?  I used the former.

I downloaded the airsecure app, went to settings, general, accessibility, turned on guided access.  Started the the airsecure app, triple clicked the home button, set up guided access, exited that dialog to get back to the text, logged in, selected a test, etc, etc.  When I got to a question that required text, i tapped there, the keyboard came up, I clicked the microphone, and got  the usual line that gets squiggly when you talk, etc.  Worked just like it always does.

We have been trying to find a last minute solution for Speech to Text for our district as well. It was just brought to our attention yesterday, and testing begins tomorrow. Yikes!

Robert, you mentioned, “Our para who looked into this said the latter option was the easiest to figure out, you just hit the microphone icon on the keyboard, and start talking.” We tried setting up a test on an iPad and when we got to a short-answer question, the microphone icon was visible on the iPad keyboard, but it was disabled. Do you know if you had to put on any special software or settings to allow that functionality. I did try setting the test to permissive mode, but that didn’t seem to make a difference. Some have suggested installing Dragon Naturally Speaking for the iPad, but we don’t know how intuitive that will be for a student that has not used it. Any ideas?

Jon, that would be text to speech, not speech to text.

We have been planning on deploying the testing app using the google management console as a single app kiosk, so we can't run third party apps at the same time.   We'll either be using Dragon on PCs for kids who know that well, using a scribe, or using ipads to test kids who have that accommodation.  Our para who looked into this said the latter option was the easiest to figure out, you just hit the microphone icon on the keyboard, and start talking.

It does look, though, like we could set some cbs up as public session kiosk machines instead of single app kiosks and still do speech to text, but the browser wouldn't run full screen.  Since all our cbs are a only 11", I hate to give up any more screen real estate.

Sorry for the delayed response.

We have checked it out. It is not ideal, but will work. To my knowledge there is no 3rd party plug-in/software you can use. On the Chrome platform Secure Browser will use the Chrome built in TTS engine.

When I say it is not ideal, I mean it is not very human sounding, pronounces some words incorrectly, and speaks with poor inflections.

An example would be during the pre-test sound check on a Chromebook/Box instead of saying "This text is being read out loud", it mispronounces read and says "This text is being reed out loud.

I hope this helps.

Who's used speech to text on a chromebook for SBAC testing (if even possible) and what 3rd party software did you use?

I'm in dire need of some suggestions.

Thanks
