I am very excited to announce that Rodje Malcolm will be joining Stephen Llano and myself as a trainer at this year’s Summer BP Debate Institute at Colgate University. Not only does this team bring a wealth of experience to the table, it also offers a uniquely diverse set of perspectives on debating. I am confident that participants will come away from their week with us not only primed for competitive success in the following year, but also with a much deeper understanding of debate as an activity.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with our trainers, I have included brief resumes of each below:

Rodje Malcom –

Rodje Malcom is a militant vegan of the Third Sector who concluded a ‘Cinderella run’ at USUDC 2015 as the top team on the tab and a Grand Finalist. He was the champion of Pan-Ams 2014 and America’s Cup 2016. Since then he has served as Chief Adjudicator for Pan-Ams 2016, USU Western Regionals, the Brandeis IV, the Huber Debates and as Deputy Chief Adjudicator for USUDC 2016. He is also impressively symmetrical with a melodious accent perfect for making listening to lectures an enjoyable experience.

Stephen Llano –

Boasting a truly luxurious head of hair (jealous), Stephen M. Llano, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Director of Debate at St. John’s University in New York City. He holds a BA in history from Texas A&M University and an MA in Speech Communication from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He researches and writes about the pedagogy of argumentation, argumentation theory, Buddhist thought, the Beat Generation, rhetorical theory and criticism, and the history of debate in the United States. He has presented his research at conferences around the world including the Netherlands and Japan. He has lectured and taught debating worldwide, including Ukraine, Mexico, and Serbia. He maintains a blog about debating at www.sophist.nyc and is regularly asked to tabulate tournaments across the United States.

Josh Martin –

Heading up the training for our Institute, Josh Martin will be serving as Chief Adjudicator at next year’s USUDC in Denver, Colorado. This will be his second time filling this role at the USUDC where he has also been Champion, Top Speaker, three time Top Rated Judge and sat on the panel for the Grand Final a record five times. He has also broken as a judge six times at the World Championships, as well as at the Oxford IV, Cambridge IV, Yale IV and UADC. He has served on the Adjudication Cores of over a dozen tournaments including the USU West Coast Regional Championships, Colgate IV, Hong Kong Debate Open, Pan Pacific Championships and Air Force Academy Classic.
