Disclaimer: never go anywhere near a winch cat ever. if you don't have a whole bunch of trees between you and the cat and you and the entire winch line you are in a seriously dangerous area. If you have an in at Stowe and they say they are OK with uphill travel as long as you are visible and not being an idiot, that's GREAT! i don't have a pass there so i wouldn't feel too bad taking the risk, but i know at Sugarbush they frown upon it heavily, not only that their uphill travel policy is purposefully preventative, you can only get to the top of valley house or north lynx while remaining within the rules. you can go the long way to the top of castle rock without getting caught too easily since they seldom groom that peak and tho they say overnight stays on the mountain are not aloud the castlerock warming hut is a long trail shelter and is always open with a propane heater if you know how to turn it on. the patrolers are cool with it but they still rather you be out of there when they get up there around 9:00.

At the employee meeting they asked employees to spread the word that people should stop trying to hide from the cats.  They wish people would try and make themselves visible, wear clothing and lights so they stand out.  Wave to the cat drivers, let them know you are aware of them.   Right now they see people trying to hide in the woods.

I got the impression that they are trying to make this work, but if people keep doing stupid stuff Stowe may be forced to ban it.    The changes to the policy were done because people kept getting near cats on a winch.    The uphill traffic apparently has more faith in the cables than mountain operations.

Thanks!  Looks like as long as we stay off the gondola trails we are good for AM skinning.

Does anyone know if you can skin up Stowe before operations begin in the mornings?  What is the resort policy?  What about the auto road?  Other options?

Thanks,
