In the Burlington School District, we use PowerSchool as our SIS and this
question came to my attention a few weeks ago. After our conversion to
PowerSchool, we almost immediately found that there were some fields in our
old system that didn't exist in our new system. Preferred Name was one such
field. I quickly learned how to customize PS to add these new fields (using
"database extensions"). So we've been able to record a student's preferred
name for a while. Its been used for nicknames ("P.J.") and more recently to
record name changes for transgendered students before their name change was

But for a long time the preferred name wasn't really displayed anywhere.
So, when this issue came up recently I found ways to display it in as many
places as possible, including adding the field to many, many reports.

We don't have a written policy right now.
