The Barre Supervisory Union also has MITEL phone systems (separate systems at each school but they all talk to each other).

We did comparisons similar to Robert.

We get exceptional service but don't need it often.  Our vendor is Integrity Communications.

We have a Mitel system purchased from Mountain Telecom.  It's an extremely powerful system.  From a management perspective it's definitely more complex than the 3com system it replaced.  Never the less, I do manage it, it's not that tough, and they'll train you when they install it.  Mitel gives huge discounts to schools when they quote these things, you might be surprised what it costs if you've gotten estimates from others.  Mtn's quote was a third less than all the others I got.

When we bought this thing 3 years ago, I crunched some numbers, hosted VOIP vs a PBX, and a PBX pays for itself pretty quickly, unless I looked at the price of service after erate discounts instead of before.  I opted to go with this, and then next thing I knew erate changed and the voice subsidies started tailing off.  We'd be spending $40k a year on our phone bill instead of $4k if I had this many extensions on a hosted service now, so I was extremely relieved I went this route.

Over the last couple of years we have moved most of our schools to a hosted VOIP system with WCVT.  Some of our schools are not in their territory but we have still been able to implement systems for those schools.  It is a great system - web-based management, lots of features/customizations, fully 911 compliant, local company, great support, etc.  I am not sure how far outside of their territory they want to go but it is worth a call to them.

Hello,

We are looking to do a VoIP system upgrade here in Winooski. I see this was somewhat addressed last winter; what are the economical options here? We use Avaya hardware (phones & PBX) currently. The system is 10 years old and we want something a little more user friendly so our IT team can provide support.

What are you using?
