To send a minimal test message email via a telnet connection, you establish the connection, then usually it's something like:

HELO <some name, doesn't usually matter what, just can't be blank>
MAIL FROM:<your email address>
RCPT TO: <where you want to send the test message>
DATA
.

A quick way to tell if the server can sent through the firewall:  From the server in question, telnet to gmail's smtp server on port 25.  Assuming you get a connection, you're on the right track.  I usually attempt a full send via the telnet to ensure it goes through.

When I change the FQDN to smtp-relay.gmail.com it tries to send the test email, but the result is:  Could not verify the result of connection test, please check your mailbox to see whether an email is received.

I'm still unsure about the firewall blocking outgoing SMTP, but I'm told it is unlikely.

Hi All,

I've got MS System Center 2012 partially set up to handle our antivirus/malware woes.  Today I was trying to get email notifications set up, but I'm not having any luck.  We use Gmail, and my understanding is that I need to have SMTP relaying set up on the server, which I have attempted.  But it doesn't work.  Has anyone successfully set this up?  The best directions I've found are here:  https://larslohmann.blogspot.com/2014/09/configure-windows-2012-r2-smtp-server.html

Thanks for any guidance.
