If you have a list of what the file names are, and what you want them to
be, it's really easy to create a batch file for Windows, or a script for a
Mac, to rename the files, using Excel, a google sheet, or whatever. For
instance, on a PC, if your spreadsheet has the from names in column A, the
to names in column B, put a formula in C1 that says

='rename '&A1&' '&B1

Then copy this formula down to all the rows that have file names. Select
column C, copy it, paste it to a text editor. Save the file in the editor
as renamepics.bat, and save it in the same folder as the pictures. Open a
command prompt, change to the directory with the photos, and type
renamepics and hit enter.

I could probably do all that in a minute. I use the same technique for
lots of batch operations: creating accounts in active directory, removing
old accounts, moving folders around when I do server migrations, changing
permissions on things, I could go on and on...

If you don't have a list of before and after to start with, you can always
make one just by piping the output of a dir command (ls on a mac) to a
file, then import that file into excel, then create the to: file names
using another formula.

We didn't find an affordable tool for batch renaming. We will be sending
this note to all photographers this summer:

Dear Professional Photographer,

School's expectations for student and staff photos have changed. In
addition to the traditional wishes of parents for their children’s photos,
schools must add photos in a timely fashion to the student management
system, food service database, library check-out database, website staff
directory and staff human resources database.

Photographers wishing to do a school’s student and staff photos are
required to meet these minimum guidelines for our databases:

   Format: jpg

   Dimensions: minimum of 640 (w) X 800 (h) - 4:5 aspect ratio

Size: min of 300KB per image

Photos named with our student management system ID. A list of student
and staff IDs and names by school and grade level may obtain from the

October 1st: Deadline for delivery to data manager of student and staff
   photos - initial set*

November 1st: Deadline for delivery to data manager of student and staff
   photos - make-up or re-do*

Method of delivery of images to data manager: Dropbox, shared folder or
   similar online tool.

* It is the responsibility of the photographer to schedule with a school
principal a date for taking photos that will make the deadline attainable.

Hi Listers -
Each of our schools has a different vendor for school photos. Two of the
three vendors do not provide photos with file names matching the student
ID. In order to get the photos loaded into our school lunch program, the
file name needs to match the ID number. Can anyone recommend a program
that can do this?

Thank you!
