When working with students, I would notice they are so hung up on getting the research that checks off all the required boxes, that it became necessary to explain to them the nursing research cycle, and then send them back top their professors to request latitude when research those topics which were aging out of the 5 year rule. I noticed that this year many assignments had extended the limit back to 10 years!

I've gotten to the point (especially with nursing, which demands new research, constantly) of saying to those who just don't give up: looks like you might be the one who has to do the most recent research! I say it with a smile. 99.9% of them take my point. Good luck!

Lately I’ve been getting requests for searches on what where hot topics from years ago. Hourly/purposeful rounding, infant alarms. Requestors want the last few years. There are not many articles written on hourly rounding from the last 2 years (according to CINAHL and OVID MEDLINE and please do not reply with search strategies). However, these people just don’t seem to understand that sometimes topics haven’t been updated. How do you reply nicely that “I’ve looked at the lit on your subject and there is nothing more current?” I guess that is one way, but sometimes people need to be hit over the head.
