Duke Medical Center Library & Archives is hiring! We are looking for an innovative librarian to lead research and education services for Duke Health. We are seeking candidates with experience and knowledge to complement and extend our services in evidence-based practice, or to bridge into new areas, such as data services.


Associate Director for Research and Education

Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives is seeking a creative, proactive and service-driven librarian to lead our Research and Education team. The Associate Director for Research and Education is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the Library's research and education programs, which include instruction, reference, consultations, and systematic review searching. The Associate Director supervises and coordinates the work of the unit's five professional librarians and serves as a liaison to a user group. This leadership position serves as a key member of the Library's planning and management groups and works as a primary partner in setting and achieving the goals of the Medical Center Library & Archives.

The Associate Director for Research and Education must have experience working as a liaison and possess knowledge and experience in a key service area for health sciences libraries, such as evidence-based medicine or data sciences.

Leadership Responsibilities

  *   Works with Duke Health departments, educational programs, and faculty, as well as other Duke libraries to recommend, implement and evaluate new services and resources.
  *   Facilitates short and long range planning for Research and Education. Identifies, develops and implements new services and programs.
  *   Evaluates and ensures the delivery of quality services.
  *   Monitors trends in pedagogy and librarianship and recommends new initiatives as well as improvements in services and procedures.
  *   Provides input into library systems and public service interfaces. Works with Information Technology & Digital Initiatives staff to identify needs for upgrading and enhancing systems for staff and patrons.
  *   Coordinates activities of professional staff in the department and ensures they are aligned with Library priorities and resources.
  *   Provides coaching, mentoring and feedback to Research and Education librarians.
  *   Encourages participation by department members in library-wide activities and projects, both to enhance their view of the larger library picture and to apply their knowledge and expertise to library problems outside the department.
  *   Participates as member of the Medical Center Library & Archives Council.
  *   Contributes to strategic planning, budget, personnel, and policy decisions.

Research and Education Responsibilities

  *   Serves as liaison to a department or group of learners, providing proactive outreach and customized information services.
  *   Coordinates Library's partnership with Duke Health's Performance Improvement Services and Care Redesign teams, in which librarians are embedded into quality improvement teams.
  *   Coordinates Library's partnership with the Duke Evidence Synthesis Group, which conducts systematic and scoping reviews for AHRQ and various health organizations.
  *   Participates in development of educational programs that support information management and the practice of evidence based medicine, including teaching classes and orientations in a variety of settings, utilizing a variety of teaching strategies, and applying web-based technology to the delivery of education services.
  *   Develops approaches for systematic review services, conducts comprehensive searches in multiple databases, and monitors quality of library searches.
  *   Provides assistance to faculty, students and staff through in-depth consultations and the Library's on-call reference service.
  *   Collaborates with Assistant Director for Communications and Web Content for developing marketing plans and materials for services.
  *   Participates in database evaluations and recommends new or alternate resources.
  *   Serves on library task forces and committees and represents the Medical Center Library externally.

Administrative Responsibilities

  *   Ensures that current institutional and library policies and procedures are maintained and followed.
  *   Develops annual travel and capital expense requests for Research and Education staff.
  *   Conducts regular performance appraisals for Research and Education staff.
  *   Promotes opportunities for training and continuing education for department staff to enhance their expertise in relevant areas.
  *   Manages personnel issues and problems for the department, assists in interpretation of Duke policies, and provides supervision to ensure compliance with these policies.
  *   Ensures collection and reporting of departmental statistics.

QUALIFICATIONS

  *   Master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of other education and experience
  *   A minimum of 5 years of library experience with increasing supervisory and management responsibilities
  *   Knowledge of evidence-based practice or data sciences relevant to health sciences libraries.
  *   Experience serving as a liaison to a user group
  *   Experience in delivering innovative services in a health sciences library
  *   Experience in providing library instruction using best practices for teaching
  *   Excellent searching skills in health sciences databases
  *   Ability to provide leadership in a team-oriented organization
  *   Excellent supervisory and management skills
  *   Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  *   Ability to manage multiple priorities in a changing environment
  *   Ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively in a complex, fast-paced environment
  *   Demonstrated initiative and flexibility in adapting to change
  *   Knowledge and interest in expanding and changing library environments and technologies
