Dear Municipal Officials,

Are you prepared for the worst?

The Vermont Historic Records Program (VHRP) and the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA) are excited to offer a new training series to help walk towns through the basics of disaster management and introduce concepts for continuity of operations planning.

Disaster Planning for Municipal Records

May 8th (9:30am – 12:30 pm)

Overview session:  Disaster Preparedness and Response Basics

This three-hour presentation will review the five phases of disaster management:  mitigation, prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.  This overview can serve as an introduction to those who have not participated in an emergency management program or as a refresher for those who have. To RSVP for this FREE session please email [log in to unmask] or call 802-828-3897.

Additional Sessions:

Disaster Preparedness and Response Intensive

If you enjoy the overview session, consider committing to the subsequent series of four workshops that will go into greater detail about the five phases of disaster management.   Mornings will be presentations, followed by practical, hands-on sessions in the afternoon.  There will be time to chat and share thoughts and ideas over lunch.  There will be homework to help you apply your knowledge to the municipal records in your care.  The goal is for each participating town to have a disaster plan in place by the end of the series.

Session one

Morning: Risk Assessment for Cultural Heritage Collections

Bag Lunch and Roundtable Chat

Afternoon: Walkthrough with Fire Chief

Session two

Morning: Planning for Disaster

Bag Lunch and Roundtable Chat

Afternoon: Independent, supported time to get started on your plan

Session three

Morning: Disaster Response

Bag Lunch and Roundtable Chat

Afternoon: Tabletop Disaster Response Exercise

Session four

Morning: Collections Salvage

Bag Lunch and Roundtable Chat

Afternoon: Hands-on Collection Salvage Activity

This training opportunity is a continuation of work funded by a grant from the Vermont Secretary of State’s office in collaboration with the National Historical Publications & Records Commission. The follow up sessions, which have yet to be scheduled, will be held roughly a month apart.  Scheduling will be based in part on participant interest. You do not need to attend the overview session to take the intensive.  If you have questions, please contact Megan Wheaton-Book:  [log in to unmask] or Rachel Onuf rachel.onuf@vermontgov.
