SUBJ:††† †††† Appointment of Sheila Boland Chira as Director of the Undergraduate Writing Center

I am pleased to announce the appointment, of Sheila Boland Chira, Senior Lecturer in the Department of English, as the next Director of UVMís Undergraduate Writing Center, effective with the start of the 2018-2019 academic year.† Sheila will replace Sue Dinitz, who is retiring after directing the Writing Center for many years.† Sheila will be responsible for leading and managing the Writing Center in support of its mission to foster undergraduate studentsí writing skills in an inclusive and productive environment.†

Sheila is ideally suited for this role.† She holds a B.A degree, Magna Cum Laude, in English and American Literature from Hartwick College, and an M.A. degree in English and American Literature from New York University.† Sheila has been a faculty member in the Department of English since 1999.† She has taught a variety of literature and writing courses, including a D1 course and an Honors College course.† She has been actively engaged with the Undergraduate Writing Center, the Writing in the Disciplines (WID) Program, and the Foundational Writing and Information Literacy Program.† She has incorporated pedagogical and research advances into her composition classes on an ongoing basis.† Sheila has a passion for working with students, and she is eager to apply her talents through the Undergraduate Writing Center.†

Since its inception in 1982, the Undergraduate Writing Center has evolved into a responsive and nationally respected program, critical to studentsí success in writing.† It is multifaceted, offering one-to-one writing support to students at any point in the writing process, a Writing Partners Program for students needing more intensive support, and a WID Mentor Program that attaches tutors to writing-intensive classes in the major, offered in collaboration with the Writing in the Disciplines Program.† Last year, writing tutors held 3,587 individual tutoring sessions, worked with 306 students in group sessions, and facilitated 132 workshops involving 3,153 students, for a total of 7,046 student contacts.† Assessments have made clear the powerful, positive impact of these programs on studentsí success.† As Director, Sheila will maintain and build on this highly successful program.††

Please join me in welcoming Sheila Boland Chira to her new role as the Director of UVMís Undergraduate Writing Center.
