Great morning of backyard birding - and it’s not even 10:00 yet! The morning started with two lovely female Evening Grosbeaks dropping in for a snack, followed by the regular crew (titmice, chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatches, cardinals, starlings, Mourning Doves, juncos). Then, a few minutes ago, a Northern Shrike was perched near the feeders. The shrike took off after a Blue Jay and a chase of several minutes ensued. The two birds went to an old apple tree, the jay going from branch to branch with the shrike following. A second jay joined the battle, flying at the shrike, but the small raptor was not deterred. It kept its sights on the original target, chasing and swooping at it again and again until all three birds went out of sight.
