Dear Unit Research Administrators, Grant Managers and Principal Investigators,

On behalf of SPA, I would like to thank everyone who participated in SPA EDU '18-19 education initiative. We had our last session of the school year (SPA EDU: Sponsored Project Financial Reporting and Closeout) on May 9. All '18-19 seminar materials can be found on https://www.uvm.edu/spa/education-and-learning

In total, 16 individual topics were presented in '18-19. One of the topics - PeopleSoft Tools and Best Practices for Financial Management - was offered three different times so everyone interested in this subject could participate. Linda Serrantonio, Lana Metayer, Julie Macy, Emily Trantum, Marcy Whittle, Molly Epstein, Kathy McConnell, and Josh Tyack facilitated majority of the seminars.

The series would not be successful without participation from our partner departments as follows:
Melanie Locher (RPO) presented The History of IRB, IACUC and IBC Institutional Review Board.
Victoria Jones (Research Compliance) presented Financial Conflict of Interest on Sponsored Research and Export Controls in the Context of Sponsored Research.
Down Caffrey (Cost Accounting) co-facilitated Cost Transfers on Sponsored Projects.
Nicole Schwartz (Research Administration and Integrity) has done a wonderful job helping us with scheduling '18-19 and updating SPA website with seminar content throughout the year.
Paul Goldberg (Professional Development and Training) has been a true partner in this undertaking.

Drawing on lessons learned this year from delivered sessions and considering your suggestions for future topics, SPA and our partner departments have been working on the content, format and timing of sessions for '19-20 school year. Because so much of the material in our seminars is foundational in nature, I expect we will offer some of the same workshops annually. At the same time, we are developing a number of new sessions that represent more advanced subject matter, for example, "Find Funding: Tools and Topics" and "Award Relinquishments and Award Transfers In." If you have suggestions on what advanced topics you would like to see in our future sessions, please send me a note!

This summer I will be working with Professional Development and Training to finalize new sessions and develop a schedule for the entire school year. Once the schedule is established, it will be communicated via SPANews as well as by Professional Development and Training, in accordance with the existing practice.

I hope to see many of you in our future sessions in the next school year.

Have a great week.
