I would agree with Shannon re: discord.  My kids are on that platform with friends, and we had some "unsanctioned" use on our FRC robotics team for student communication, and old habits are ingrained and die hard!

@Mike - We’re regular discord users in our house (teen gamers and game designers). My concern with using discord for school is that it’s an environment kids have been using largely unmoderated for years. My son serves as a moderator/sys op for several groups and teen behavior using the app is not school appropriate. I think old habits could be difficult to break.

These are, indeed, interesting times.

The way I read it is that you must be able to accept Zoom’s ToS only if you are going to create an account with them.  So, only the HOST needs to meet those requirements and the attendees are not bound by those terms.

I wish Hangouts Meet had better management controls for the host. Not being able to turn off IM, or prevent other participants from muting or even kicking other users (including the host) out makes it hard for me to recommend to our teachers.

Has anyone tried using Discord? It can do voice, IM, and streaming video.

Hang in there and go wash your hands,
Mike

I too read Terms of Service last night..looks OK as far as under 13 or COPPA kind of stuff... they do have pretty extensive Terms... you might read it yourself just to get the gist.... It seems fairly standard...

I looked at the Zoom ToS and Privacy policies when this was all getting going and was unable to find any provision specific to the 13 and under or COPPA stuff. I *think* that means that it's your standard "If your not 13 you can't use it" but I could be wrong.

I am getting mixed messages around the use of Zoom for virtual learning with students under 13.  Can those of you who have been vetting companies for privacy compliance let me know if they have been added to the "approved" list?
