Oh, ye of little vocabulary...  check the CONTEXT.
 
When I do a survey of who uses library services (and which services) the
term "user" seems most appropriate. If I'm writing a TQM report, customers
is the going term for that context. If I spend a lot of time, one-on-one, doing
a reference interview, a search and document delivery - I'm a professional
helping a client. And, yes, I think there are times when "patron" is
le mot juste.
 
There's no reason why we HAVE to always use the same word.
