Inquiry to Network Libraries Concerning
the Effectiveness of the 3M #1365
Security Gate

In August of 1991, The University of New Mexico Medical Center Library
installed two 3M Model 1365 security gates. Since the initial
installation of these gates the Library has noted that the gates do not
detect tattle-taped material which is :

A. carried within twelve inches of the deck
B. carried parallel to the the deck
C. carried above average shoulder height
D. carried in a full backpack

We have discovered that the system cannot effectively scan two or three
patrons passing through the gates in rapid succession. The scanning
mechanism cannot scan a patron and reset fast enough to handle several
people passing through the gate in a clump.

The Library would be genuinely interested in observations made by other
institutions using the 3M Model 1365 Library Security System.

Please reply to Dianne Zincke, Facilities Manager.
