Aloha was a packet radio network developed at the U. of Hawaii by Norman
Abramson in the early 70s.  It linked U. of H. campuses across the islands
starting in 1971, and according to "The Matrix", it still is.
 
For more information on the history and techology, you might check out
"Computer Networks" by Andrew Tanenbaum - one of the best general
textbooks around.
