The Kabbalah is one large component of Jewish knowledge.  It's focus is the metaphysical and is poperly studied only by adults over the age of forty who have already mastered the huge body of learning regarding Jewish law (Talmud), and
Bible study (Torah).  There are, by the way, levels of understanding of the
Torah.
 
Actually, there are four levels of understanding the Bible.  Only after you
have mastered all of this are you supposed to enter into the study of the
metaphysical -- which is why the young Rabbi in the movie was considered
a bit unconventional to be delving into it at such an early age.  But, it
takes all kinds -- he was precocious.
