MLA isn't "hitching onto" this listserv.  MLA is saving this list from
extinction when its original owners were forced to give it up.
 
I don't suggest that nobody else would have come to our rescue, but I do
think that MLA is a very appropriate group to take on the responsibility
for continuance of this list.
 
Seems to me that this is a case of "you're damned if you do and damned if
you don't!"  There are those who want our professional association to
take more leadership and a bigger role in our professional lives and that
could mean involvement in the "hot" communications media (like this
list), and there are others who don't want the association to have any
role on this list at all.
 
Count me among those who feel that MLA has a role to play in our future
on this list and shouldn't be condemned before committing a transgression!
