Hi folks, I received this information about the COOL conference a few days ago. The conference deals with so many different issues it could easily be applies to the many clubs and organizations at UVM. I attended this conference my sophomore year and was able to bring back many useful ideas - ideas which have taken form. If anyone out there is interested in attending the conference maybe we could figure out some type of group transportation. Students come to: acquire critical technical skills, discover new models for organizing groups and programs, find new resources, teach each other, have new conversations, challenging ideas, opinions, and biases, share hopes, heroes, and plan or the future. AT THIS YEARS COOL CONFERENCE YOU'LL HAVE A CHANCE TO..... * Listen to some of the top leaders in community service nationwide, including the Honorable marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children's Defense Fund. * Visit the Capitol Hill where you will discuss current social issues with democratic and republican legislators, tour the House and Senate buildings, and visit your own state's representatives. * Participate in a Community Plunge, a one day service project, giving immediate and direct service through community projects such as painting murals and renovating playgrounds with students from GW's Neighbors Project. * Lead or attend many of the 150 workshops on issues and topics like coalition building, AIDS, recruitment volunteers, community service, advocacy, cultrue and diversity, service-learning, grant writing federal funding and legislation, starting a service program, the environment, the critical elements of service, literacy, the arts and social change, homelessness, and more. * Explore the Opportunities Fair featuring exhibits by over 70 regional, state, national, and international organizations. The Fair is open each day of the conference and provides an opportunity to collect information and resources to help your campus programs and to find out about graduate programs and job opportunities. * Discussion Panels and Open Forums on contemporary and controversial issues related to service in our complex society. * Identity Groups organized by race and ethnicity, religious and spiritual identity, gender, and sexual orientation, as well as on-campus identities (community college, urban, rural, private, public) to discuss specific issues, needs, and agendas. * Attend the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for a special educational tour and discussion on human rights conducted by museum educators. * Dine at the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, a dramatic experience in the inequitable distribution of resources throughout the world. "Draw" a fate determining whether you will be in the 15 percent enjoying a gourmet meal, the 25 percent eating rice and beans, or the 60 percent waiting for plain rice and water. It's an unusual experience which you can recreate on your own campus. (Limited to 500 people.) WORKSHOP PROPOSAL & STUDENT KEYNOTE ADDRESS: This is a great way to sharpen trainig skills and share your expertise. If you want to present a workshop, submit a title and a 50 word, typed workshop description. Also include this sentence and its completion, "At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to..." Include your name, address, day and evening phone numbers, organizational/campus affiliation, ideal workshop size and any other relevant information by February 7, 1996. If your are co-presenting a workshop, please indicate the primary contact person on your application. (AV equipment will not be provided, so presenters should be prepared to provide their own, if necessary.) For more information contact the conference office at 202/994-2843. Apply to give the student keynote address at the opening ceremony on Thursday evening. The speech should focus on student service and the conference theme. To apply, send a video or audio tape, and transcript of your speech to the Keynote Committee at the Conference office by February 15, 1996. SWAP SHOP AND IDEA BOARDS: Bring T-Shirts, posters, caps, and other paraphernalia from your school or servcie program to sell at the SWAP SHOP. Proceeds help fund conference scholarships. This year COOL introduces IDEA BOARDS. Decorate a poster board with pictures, brochures, and other items representing your campus program and bring extra brochures to share. IDEA BOARD AWARDS will be given for creativity of board design, strength of overall service program, innovation of a specific project. THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY: GW is located in the Northwest section of the Washington in the historical district of Foggy Bottom. In addition to the many attraction of the campus community, GW is located just blocks from the "The Mall" which includes the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the United States Capitol, and lots of kites and frisbees. In its 175th year, GW is celebrating its strong connection with the community and hopes for the future of education and service.
