The following report is being posted on behalf
of Carla J. Funk, MLA Executive Director.

The AHA-sponsored invitational meeting on "The
Future of Health Services Libraries and Infor-
mation Resources" was held on Monday, January 29, 1996
in Washington, DC. Of the 45 invited health care
associations, about 20 were represented at the meeting.

The first issue discussed was the status of the AHA
Resource Center. AHA reported that the Resource
Center services have been refocused to emphasize those
things that AHA members most frequently request, in-
cluding: responses to requests for factual information,
document delivery of journals through outsourcing,
access to the historical collection, access to the
general collection through outside partnerships that
will help maintain and enhance this resource,
continuation of the Center for Hospital and Healthcare
Administration History and the Friends program, and
ongoing production of the Health Planning and
Administration database (HEALTH) and the Hospital
and Health Administration Index.

The discussion then focused on the preservation and
enhancement of the Resource Center as a resource to
the health care field as a whole and explored the
feasibility of establishing an independent "center"
for accessing health services administration infor-
mation in the future. The possibilities of developing
a network of association libraries in the health care
area was explored. The associations agreed that study
of this issue should begin with a survey of the
associations to determine resources that the
associations hold as well as other information to
determine whether a network is possible.

One of the participants pointed out that the Modern
Healthcare article (January 22, 1996) that discussed
the Resource Center and this meeting inaccurately re-
ported that there was a$100,000 grant proposal to
study the feasibility of creating a national health
services library.

HLS will follow these events in cooperation with MLA
staff and report new developments.
