THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
 
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries.  It employs
a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to
work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on
committees and are involved in other areas of staff development.  A full
spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly
expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's
distinctive strengths.  The Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects
such as the renovation of the main library building, the complete
retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation
projects which include network access to scholarly information and
preservation imaging.
 
HARVEY CUSHING/JOHN HAY WHITNEY MEDICAL LIBRARY
 
The Medical Library, with a collection in excess of 360,000 volumes, serves
the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, the Yale-New Haven Hospital,
and other affiliated institutions of the Yale-New Haven Medical Center.  The
recently renovated and expanded Medical Library offers state of the art
electronic information services.  The Office of Academic Computing, the Center
for Medical Informatics and the Medical Library are involved in developing
computing and information systems through the IAIMS program at the Medical
School.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
 
This position reports to the Head of Reference Services.  The Harvey
Cushing/John Hay Whitney  Medical Library seeks an innovative and service
oriented reference librarian.  As part of the Reference team, primary
responsibilities are health sciences reference service, end-user training,
on-line searching, and special projects as assigned.  Develops and
participates in preparing guides and documentation for the Web site, assists
with troubleshooting of automated systems.  Participates in maintenance of
reference collection and the Selected Internet Resources project.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.  Excellent communication and
interpersonal skills, and problem-solving abilities.  Ability to be a flexible
team member and to thrive in a rapidly changing environment.  Strong public
service orientation and ability to interact with faculty efficiently.
Demonstrated knowledge of microcomputers, networks, and on-line systems.
