The Passion, Jeannette Winterson

This fictional account of a French peasant and a Venetian casino worker
during the Napoleon era weaves first-person accounts of love, obsession, war
and life into a heartbreaking tale.  Henri, the peasant, is an innocent
country boy who joins the French army, only to find himself as personal
assistant to Napoleon Bonaparte during his conquests.  His counterpart,
Villanelle, gambles and roams the canals of Venice, falls in love, loses her
heart, meets Henri, and determines his fate for him.  Winterson performs a
masterful turn at the intersection between fantasy and reality, reminding us
at intervals: "Trust me.  I'm telling you stories."
