Hello Kerry, "Cyclogenesis" describes the weather phenomenon of the birth of a cyclone or tornado. "Cytogenetics" is the study of chromosomes to analyze and determine genetic information. For birth defects, genetic analysis is used to locate any chromosome anomalies, and describe and determine the particular condition. That is the closest word that comes to my mind. It does not relate to any particular birth defect(s). Perhaps your patron missed a word or two in the teacher's discussion. Depending on how deep you or your patron want to dig, if he or she needs to find a definition of a specific birth defect. you can try some of these sources and ask them a "sounds like" question, or examine the lists of conditions. These organizations or resources have lists of genetic disorders and conditions by name.
