Farm Communication: Tractor to field worker

I just wanted to share a discovery we made on our farm this spring. We
discovered an ease in communication between tractor operator and outside
worker during plastic mulch laying and water wheeling.

Using bluetooth earbuds and having a phone call keeps a hands free, always
connected communication. It seems simple, but we just discovered it this
spring when wanting to keep the window closed on the cab tractor for dust
reasons, as well as minimize the risk of breaking a window lifting and

Hello,

Our electricity bills have skyrocketed lately, and I'm looking for places
to be smarter about energy use. Our high tunnel circulation fans are a huge
piece of that puzzle. I read recently (Orisha) that fans should be turned
*off* above a certain temperature, which made me wonder if folks are
turning fans off in any particular conditions? We turn them off in the
winter if plants are covered, but I assumed always on in the summer was the
way to go...thoughts? [...]

I’d advocate *against* coyote urine, as I’ve learned it’s likely collected
from coyotes held in inhumane conditions. I also don’t believe it’s any
more effective than other deterrents- like most, works for a time and then

Generally, it looks like pest distributions are starting to align more closely with previous years as I look back at past seasons. We fell behind a bit with the cooler weather, but things have picked up recently.
Unfortunately, after several weeks of clean plants, we are now starting to see some Spinach/Beet leaf miner eggs in some select plantings in Vermont. No huge outbreaks yet but we now have confirmation that they are flying around in the region. Lots of helpful tips and some great pictures as well. Thank you to the the
few but very helpful responders to my original question:

*We have been planting our fall brassicas into grown-in-place rye mulch for
several years and love the process EXCEPT for transplanting. Currently we
measure spacing with a tape, auger holes with a drill attachment, then add
amendments (all pelletized) to holes, and mix them in by hand as we're

Hello friends, before I drop $500 online, I thought I would see if anyone
has a friendly local machinist they have worked with for manufacturing
wheel spacers (I am in NW VT, so Burlington/St. Albans areas preferred).
In this specific case, I am making a JD 850 usable for row crops by
widening out the front wheel spacing 3 inches each side. An online search
suggests that no manufacturer is supporting an 80s vintage tractor for
front wheel spacers, though there are a couple of options by matching
specifications. I'd prefer to buy locally anyways. If there are any

Trap cropping CPB

We've been overrun by CPB the last few years. No spray works anymore. Tried moving as far as possible but on thirty acres it's not far enough. They finish the potatoes and then move onto the eggplant. Little devils.

This year I'm trying a trap crop planted on the perimeter of the field, with this year's crop on the far side. We planted some Red Norlands two weeks after the trap went in, and are delaying the rest of the main crop for another minute. I'm planning to flame weed the trap plants in hopes of nuking the first gen, [...]
