This sounds terribly frustrating.

I have multiple 1136 and they are years old. They get kind of stuck and
won’t spit out every 7th label or something. I opened them up and cleaned
the spikes that spin the label in the front with rubbing alcohol on a qtip.
Helped immensely.

Maybe not helpful info, best of luck!!
Hi all,
I hope that folks are staying hydrated out in the fields as the unseasonably warm weather continues.
As mentioned last week, Colorado Potato Beetle<https://ag.umass.edu/vegetable/fact-sheets/colorado-potato-beetle> (CPB) adults are moving around and we are now beginning to see both egg masses and small larvae. With the recent warm temperatures, these larvae are likely to feed aggressively and develop rapidly. For growers using insecticides, management is generally most effective when targeting smaller larvae, which are typically more susceptible to control measures than larger larvae. It is also important to note that CPB feeding has the greatest impact on yields when it [...]

Below are responses from my earlier post. Update from me: We still haven't flamed them as there has not been a significant hatch of the second gen. The plants are now approaching a foot tall and I'm hedging on torching them given the amount of pressure, and I'm cheap and know that new potatoes aren't far off. I reserve the right to change this thinking and torch them but at this point numbers are low and there hasn't been a massive hatch. [...]

I wanted to share two other responses.

-

This is from the meat side of things, but we have begun to realize real efficiency and time saving through Lean Manufacturing techniques. In some of the responses that came back, I see a lot of batching. We've realized that the principle of "one-piece flow" (as opposed to batching) has saved us up to 40% time with virtually no re-work. So we do our best to reduce batching and instead carry the product through each stage as one piece if possible and balance the process by moving labor resources to bottleneck points [...]

Our high tunnel circulation fans are a huge
piece of that puzzle. I read recently (Orisha) that fans should be turned
*off* above a certain temperature, which made me wonder if folks are
turning fans off in any particular conditions?
Hi folks,
A lovely family in our community is in need during what we can all agree is
a very busy time.
Farm Communication: Tractor to field worker

I just wanted to share a discovery we made on our farm this spring. We
discovered an ease in communication between tractor operator and outside
worker during plastic mulch laying and water wheeling.

Using bluetooth earbuds and having a phone call keeps a hands free, always
connected communication. It seems simple, but we just discovered it this
spring when wanting to keep the window closed on the cab tractor for dust
reasons, as well as minimize the risk of breaking a window lifting and
lowering implements.
Circulation fans...always on?

Hello,

Our electricity bills have skyrocketed lately, and I'm looking for places
to be smarter about energy use. Our high tunnel circulation fans are a huge
piece of that puzzle. I read recently (Orisha) that fans should be turned
*off* above a certain temperature, which made me wonder if folks are
turning fans off in any particular conditions? We turn them off in the
winter if plants are covered, but I assumed always on in the summer was the
way to go...thoughts? [...]

insect exclusion netting

As more and more reports of cucumber beetles and potato beetles come up, and the first reports of Spotted Wing Drosophila come through, remember that insect exclusion netting is a great management tactic for these pests. I have a decent quantity of 6.5' x 320' ExcludeNet 85 gram netting currently available (although it's going fast), a good quantity of 13' x 320' available, and limited quantities of sewn 26' x 320' currently available. ExcludeNet 85 gram netting is an extremely durable netting that will last many years.
Good morning and happy Friday everyone!

I hope you all are well and are having a stellar Spring! This season we are
hosting an on-farm farmers market and were looking for more interested
vendors to join us.
Wheel Spacer sourcing?

Hello friends, before I drop $500 online, I thought I would see if anyone
has a friendly local machinist they have worked with for manufacturing
wheel spacers (I am in NW VT, so Burlington/St. Albans areas preferred).
In this specific case, I am making a JD 850 usable for row crops by
widening out the front wheel spacing 3 inches each side. An online search
suggests that no manufacturer is supporting an 80s vintage tractor for
front wheel spacers, though there are a couple of options by matching
specifications. I'd prefer to buy locally anyways. If there are any
responses [...]

Trap cropping CPB

We've been overrun by CPB the last few years. No spray works anymore. Tried moving as far as possible but on thirty acres it's not far enough. They finish the potatoes and then move onto the eggplant. Little devils.

This year I'm trying a trap crop planted on the perimeter of the field, with this year's crop on the far side. We planted some Red Norlands two weeks after the trap went in, and are delaying the rest of the main crop for another minute. I'm planning to flame weed the trap plants in hopes of nuking the first gen, [...]
