Greetings from Solveig! One problem that some of the manuscripts you 
may be dealing with were reproduced by copyists who may have inserted 
errors or "improvements" when copying their originals. Further, you may 
be running into completely independent accounts of the same event. We 
have examples of this sort of thing going back to at least the life of 
Socrates.
