Several years ago I co-authored a book entitled The Power of Numbers, a
Math Curriculum in a Social Studies Context. It is full of problems that
encourage a lot of thinking about the use of mathematics and claims to be
made in social contexts. Teachers, who have used the book, speak to how
students think more deeply about the problem sets and how the use of
mathematics can and does affect decision making. A portion of the book
focuses on the census, which is especially relevant to this time period.
If you are interested in a copy call Educators for Social Responsibility
(ESR) at (617) 492-8820 and ask for Rachel Poliner. The book is also
listed in the ESR catalog. They may have a website, but unfortunately I
don't know the URL.
