VT SafeKids is a non-profit organization whose mission is child injury
prevention. Two main focus areas are bicycle and pedestrian safety. They
offer low cost helmets to other organizations, help put on bike rodeos, and
are beginning to focus on pedestrian safety in more detail. They also offer
mini-grants to other organizations (schools, police depts, etc.) who are
doing similar work.
Their main fundraiser each year is a Bike a Thon at which participants are
encouraged to raise a minimum of $100/each in donations. The bike a thon is
a 25- or 50-mile loop starting in Montpelier, going up route 14 to Lake
Elmore, than back on Route 100 through Stowe and Waterbury, then Route 2
returning to Montpelier. Rest stops with food and water are provided along
the way and sag support is available.
This year's event is Saturday, Sept. 15th.
If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, send me your name
and address and I will forward it to VT SafeKids. They will mail you a
registration packet with additional information about the ride and fund
raising. Please support this group that is working hard to make bicycling
and walking safe for Vermont children.
