The Vermont City Marathon needs riders to act as course marshals for their
marathon Sunday, May 27th.
The Vermont Mountain Bike Advocates Trail Patrol is coordinating volunteers
on bikes. Mountain Bikes are the most suited to the course because of the
varied surfaces over which the course will pass.
The Marathon provides all volunteers with marathon volunteer tee shirts.
There is also a huge pasta buffet after the race.
They need riders to:
1) monitor the course for stray motorists
2) keep track of the health and safety of their runners (Toward the end
runners often get fatigued and disoriented and may not be able to make
rational decisions for them selves.)
3) watch the course for "bandits" (unregistered runners whom run the race for
thrills) they are a special hazard because the race will not provide water
for them at the water stations. These runners can and often do become very
dehydrated because they do not come prepared for an unsupported run. Riders
are in a unique position to relieve this problem because we can ride along
with them and inform them that they will not be supported, This apparently
helps dissuade them from continuing.
Lay riders will be teamed with members of the Green Mountain Bike Patrol (A
regional affiliate of the National Mountain Bike Patrol) so you do not need
to have first aid experience to help out. Just a desire to ride and help out
The course is mostly well paved and you do not need to commit to riding the
full course. You can volunteer to help out on one of 5 smaller sections if
This should be a lot of fun. Our duties are fairly low key and
non-confrontational. We stand to make the day go much smoother for those
running the course.
If you can help out please respond to [log in to unmask] or call
Travis at 802-773-2995. It is important to let Travis know if you can help
soon, so that he can get the correct size tee shirt for you.
